WIBank is the first development bank to issue a digital registered bond
Frankfurt a. M., October 8, 2024 – Economic and Infrastructure Bank Hessen (WIBank) was the first development bank to successfully use a public blockchain to optimise processes when issuing a traditional registered bond. In collaboration with Cashlink Technologies, Helaba, Bankhaus Metzler, Deloitte and the law firm Annerton, the issue was successfully executed on 8 October 2024 using the Deutsche Bundesbank’s trigger solution.
By integrating blockchain technology in conjunction with the Bundesbank trigger solution, it was possible to enable delivery versus payment (DvP) in real time. This approach makes the settlement of financial transactions more secure and reduces credit and liquidity risks compared to traditional settlement processes. The issue thus demonstrates that the use of new technologies can optimise traditional processes in the issuance of securities without neglecting existing regulatory and operational requirements.
“The experience gained from this project opens up new opportunities for us to further develop existing financial products in conjunction with innovative technologies. This allows us to minimise risks and optimise processes for both ourselves and our investors. In this way, we are laying the foundations for success on the financial markets of the future,” says Dr Michael Reckhard, member of the WIBank Executive Board.
“With our project, we are making a valuable contribution to the ECB’s research work with regard to the possible introduction of digital central bank money for capital market transactions. As a development bank, we are thus supporting the further development and modernisation of the European capital market infrastructure,” comments Christian Forma, Head of Treasury at WIBank.
‘A tokenised registered bond entails a number of regulatory challenges, which we have overcome in a practice-oriented manner in a team with WIBank, Helaba, Bankhaus Metzler, Cashlink and Deloitte, in close consultation with the supervisory authority,’ comments Alireza Siadat, Partner at Annerton.
